Where to Stay Near Zion National Park
Selecting the right basecamp is one of the most important decisions when planning a trip to Zion National Park. Your lodging location directly impacts your daily travel times, parking logistics, dining options, and overall budget. This independent guide compares the gateway towns surrounding the park and lists the pros and cons of each to help you choose the best fit.
1. Springdale (Immediate Walk-In Access)
Springdale is the immediate gateway town, nestled in the mouth of Zion Canyon and bordered by the park gates on three sides. It is the most convenient option, but also the most expensive.
Springdale Lodging Pros & Cons
Pros: You can leave your vehicle parked at your hotel and ride the free Springdale Town Shuttle directly to the park pedestrian entrance. This saves you from competing for the limited parking at the Visitor Center. The town features a walkable main street lined with local cafes, gear rental shops, and art galleries.
Cons: Springdale is a premium destination. Room rates are significantly higher than surrounding towns, and lodging regularly books out months in advance during the peak travel seasons (April through October).

2. Virgin & Rockville (Quiet, Boutique & Glamping)
Rockville is located just 10 minutes west of the park entrance, while Virgin is located 20 minutes west along Highway 9. These small towns offer a quieter, rural atmosphere.
Boutique & Glamping Stays
Rockville is home to historic bed-and-breakfasts and quiet rental properties. It lacks commercial development, meaning you will need to head into Springdale or Virgin for restaurants and grocery shopping.
Virgin has become the hub for Zion glamping resorts. Here you will find luxury canvas tents, custom domes, and modern cabins set against red rock backdrops. It is also home to the Kolob Terrace Road, which provides access to Zion’s high plateau trails.
3. Hurricane & La Verkin (Budget-Friendly Hub)
Hurricane and La Verkin are sister towns located about 25 minutes (20 miles) west of the park entrance. They act as the primary budget-friendly hub for Zion visitors.
Hurricane Lodging Pros & Cons
Pros: You will find standard national motel chains, budget hotels, and local bed-and-breakfasts at a fraction of the cost of Springdale hotels. Hurricane features large grocery stores, gas stations, fast food, and local family restaurants. It is also close to Sand Hollow State Park and Quail Creek State Park.
Cons: Staying here requires driving to the park entrance each morning and finding parking at the Visitor Center or in town. You must account for a 25-minute drive each way and plan to arrive early to secure park parking.
4. St. George (Major City Amenities)
St. George is a major city located about 45 minutes (40 miles) southwest of Zion. It is the regional hub of Southern Utah.
- City Comforts: St. George offers major hotel chains, large shopping centers, local golf courses, hospitals, and a wide variety of dining options.
- Ideal For: Travelers who are planning a multi-day trip to visit Zion, Bryce Canyon, and Snow Canyon State Park, or those who prefer city amenities and dining after outdoor hikes.
5. Camping & RV Options
If you prefer camping or traveling in an RV, the Zion region has extensive options both inside and outside the park boundaries.
Inside the park, the National Park Service manages South Campground and Watchman Campground (reservations are required and must be made in advance on recreation.gov). Outside the park, Springdale, Virgin, and Hurricane offer premium, private RV resorts with hookups, pools, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Check out our directory of local RV Parks & Campgrounds to book your site.
Booking Tip: Springdale hotels and Watchman campsites book out up to 6 months in advance. If you are planning a trip during peak months (May through October), secure your lodging first before booking other travel plans. Read our guide on the Best Time to Visit Zion Area to learn more.
Zion Lodging FAQs
Should I stay inside the park or outside the park gates?
Zion Lodge is the only in-park hotel option. While staying at the Zion Lodge is convenient (you receive a red vehicle pass allowing you to drive on the Scenic Drive), it is expensive, has limited dining, and books out nearly a year in advance. Staying in Springdale (outside the gates) offers more diverse dining, shops, and hotel choices, while still allowing walk-on shuttle access.
Is there a public bus from St. George or Hurricane to Zion?
No. Currently, there is no public transit or regional bus service connecting St. George or Hurricane directly to the Zion National Park entrance. To visit the park from these towns, you must drive your own vehicle or book a seat with a private local shuttle operator. Check our directory for private shuttle listings.
Which town is best for families traveling with kids?
For families who want ease and convenience, Springdale is the best choice because children can easily walk or ride the shuttle without car seat logistics. For families on a budget, Hurricane is excellent because it offers family suite hotels, vacation rentals with kitchens, and easy access to grocery stores.
